There was a plan by a man called Edward Gibbon Wakefield the plan was to set up a company and become the boss and be rich and be known through the land.

The British government wanted to make a deal. The person that they sent was Hobson because he could translate for them.

But the deal was bad for Maori because the deal they got said that the British had control of the people but the English one said that the British people had the land as well as the people.

Who do you think is in the right? Later it was decided that the Maori version was correct because they were the first people in New Zealand.
